The Department of Geography seeks an Academic Associate to lead and direct the McGill University Geographical Information Centre (GIC). The GIC is a university facility to serve McGill’s undergraduate, graduate and faculty teaching and research needs in geographical information science and remote sensing analysis. The successful candidate will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the GIC as well as the growth of its teaching and research services to the McGill University and broader community. The GIC is host to a high performance computing facility, over 50 workstations, an active learning classroom with 38 workstation, a 12 seat electronic seminar room, and open public work spaces for over 100 people. The GIC has the multiple roles: to assist and provide a central location for the access and education of GIS and RS analysis software for potential users; a data repository for spatial and temporal digital data; and provision of advice and training of university research in the use of advanced GIS and RS software. The Academic Associate with be responsible for developing the short and long-term strategic plans for the GIC teaching, research and community support. The GIC is the spatial-analytic “gateway” for the McGill community. As such, we seek an Academic Associate that is an expert in the visual display of quantitative information and publicly communicating geographic information, and is passionate about developing these skills in the broader community. The Academic Associate will stay abreast of ongoing technological developments, and develop strategic plans for integrating these into the GIC as appropriate.

Candidates should have a PhD (or equivalent) degree in GIS and/or remote sensing analysis at the time of the appointment, should demonstrate past research and teaching experience in software implementation and use, advanced technical expertise in aspects of hardware and data management, should possess excellent communication skills in both English and French and the social skills appropriate for functioning in a student-faculty-public user environment. 

The appointment is for one year starting sometime in the fall term of 2016 when a suitable candidate is found. The position is renewable based on an annual review. Salary will be commensurate with experience.
